Why bones grow the ways they do
December 13, 2018
Bones build according to demand.
And so, to a degree, physical form actually follows function!
But what does this mean? Consider the muscles that must be required to move tusks and a jaw/face so large as this walrus'. Those muscles are so strong that they require the bone they attach to to be equally sturdy.
INTERESTING TANGENT: Ida Rolf and her colleague Moshe Feldenkrais developed their bodies of work (Rolfing and Feldenkrais) alongside each other, constantly debating STRUCTURE V. FUNCTION. While Ida believed that by changing the physical structure would lead to healing*, Moshe believed movement therapy to be the keystone.
*"This is the gospel of Rolfing: When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through. Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself."
