Happy Birthday to my Rolfing mentor!

Happy 76th birthday to my dear father + Rolfing/JinShinJyutsu/Cranio-Sacral/Visceral Manipulation/Bonesetting mentor!! Thirty minutes out of the womb, this man was working on my newborn neck. As a babe I rolled around on a pillow in his treatment room, watching the work. When I was old enough, I'd sit at the end of the treatment table and rub feet, watching the work. // When people ask me what got me into Rolfing, the answer is immediate - my father. But to answer what gives me the wide and varied skillset I carry, or what has honed my vision and ability to 'see' inside bodies still comes back to him. // When I was very young, we would sit in airports or shopping malls and just watch people move through space. He would bring my attention to a limp or a shimmy in someone's gait, or to the way they picked their shoulders up off of their back, as if to lift a metaphor of life's burdens at the same time. We would talk out their structures, and he would theorize their histories... Looking at a woman with tight ankles, a particular type of walk, and shoulders pulled to one side he might say "she looks like she's a tennis player and a new mom... just look at the way she holds her elbow and....." He had a way of showing me how to take ten steps back and see from a wider perspective. // Before I became a Rolfer, I became an anthropologist. And I think I have my dad to thank for helping me to be the kind of person who likes to take ten steps back to look at the world. To see the big picture, and my own place in it. // Here's to all of the invaluable lessons you have passed my way, pops.
